Welcome to Kapitari

The Kapitari Center was founded by the shaman Don Lucho (Luis Culquiton) in 1980 with the objective of helping to protect the incredible biodiversity of the Peruvian Amazon.
One of the primary causes of deforestation around Iquitos is unsustainable farming practices that quickly destroy the land resulting in farmers constantly having to move to new land. Therefore we teach people within local communities, such as farmers, about ecological values and sustainability, enabling them to better interact with their environment so that the fragile ecosystems are protected. This offers the possibility that our people are involved in their own development, giving them simple and basic education to help them in the management of agriculture and animal care.
We believe that the training and implementation of land management techniques and raising farm animals for our people is the cornerstone that enables real collective development. It is in this sense that our efforts to bring education and training on various topics of interest to our residents is vital.
One of the main sources of funding for the Kapitari project is through Ayahuasca ceremonies and retreats. Unlike many of the Ayahuasca retreat centers in Peru, Kapitari is not owned or run by westerners. Kapitari is owned and run by Peruvians for the benefit of Peruvians.
