We invite you to join a traditional shamanic Ayahuasca retreat of healing, transformation and altered states of consciousness in the Amazon Rainforest of Peru.
Welcome to Kapitari, a beautiful ayahuasca healing center in the Amazon rainforest close to Iquitos, Peru. Kapitari is one of the oldest shamanic centers in Peru and has been welcoming guests from all over the world for well over 15 years.
You’re invited to attend our traditional Ayahuasca retreat for a profound week of healing and transformation. This retreat is a great introduction for people who are new to working with the sacred Ayahuasca medicine. It’s for anyone who wishes to experience the profound benefits of working with Ayahuasca without it costing the earth. More than that, it also benefits the Earth; all retreat income goes to Kapitari an organisation founded by the shaman Don Lucho that is helping to protect the incredible biodiversity of the Amazon rainforest.
Over the week you’ll take part in 4 Ayahausca ceremonies led by Don Lucho, a brilliant Amazonian shaman with over 40 years experience of working with the medicine.
As well as taking part in the Ayahuasca ceremonies you’ll be fully cleansed during the week from a combination of plant medicines, mud baths, fruit baths, while also eating a traditional Ayahuasca food diet.
During the week we will be hosting 4 Ayahuasca ceremonies. The Ayahuasca medicine is a sacred plant brew that has been used by indigenous Amazonian cultures for thousands of years – primarily for healing, divination and spiritual awakening.
Working with Ayahuasca is an intense, profound, and almost always a highly transformative experience that can facilitate deep healing on all levels of your being – physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. Ayahuasca is a doorway to inner worlds that allows us access to higher states of consciousness and the experience of spiritual awakening. To many people it reveals the multi-dimensional nature of reality and ourselves and it leads us back to who we truly are.
Purging and cleansing play a fundamental role in Amazonian shamanic healing traditions. The primary reason why Ayahuasca is such an effective medicine is because it’s a purgative meaning that it usually (but not always) causes you to purge or vomit during the experience. However, what’s unique about ayahuasca is that you’re never only purging physical stuff. An ayahuasca purge also releases you of unhealthy mental and emotional energies that you may have been carrying that were initially caused by difficult experiences in your life such as emotional wounds, abuse, relationship difficulties and depression.
To ensure that you are fully cleansed by the end of the retreat you will be taking part in not only Ayahuasca ceremonies, but also other cleansing rituals and activities. You will take part in mud baths and fruit baths which draw toxins out of the body and cleanse the skin and body.
Our hope is that by the end of the retreat you will feel like a new person, fully cleansed of most of the negative and harmful toxins in your body, be they physical or emotional toxins.
The shaman leading the ceremonies is Don Lucho the owner of Kapitari Center. He has lived in, and served the same community all his life which is the small village of Manacamiri just outside Iquitos. In 1980 he founded Kapitari, an organisation and research center dedicated to helping protect and preserve the bio-diversity of the Amazon. Kapitari is located about a 40 minute walk from the village of Manacamiri.
In the following video Don Lucho explains the purpose of Kapitari:
Here is Don Lucho singing one of his icaros (sacred ayahuasca healing songs):
This retreat is open to anyone of any nationality who feels called to work with the medicine, however, the retreat will be facilitated in English. We feel this retreat is particularly well suited to people who are fairly new to working with Ayahuasca and are looking for a safe and comfortable environment in which to experience traditional sacred Ayahuasca ceremonies in Peru.
We’ve designed this retreat to be as affordable as possible because we believe the medicine should be available to anyone who wants to experience it.
Although healing is always the main focus of working with Ayahuasca on our retreats, we feel this retreat is not suitable for people who are dealing with chronic or terminal illness or very severe emotional trauma, as we may not be able to provide you with the level of care and attention that you may require. Also, note that there is about a 45 minute walk to Kapitari (sometimes through muddy conditions) so you need to be fit and able enough to complete the walk.
We are primarily looking for positive and sincere people who have an open-heart and an open-mind. To get the most out of this retreat you should feel young at heart (whatever your physical age may be), fun, easy going, and with a love for adventure and new experiences! Most of all you should be interested in spiritual and consciousness development and healing your mind, body and soul.
Due to the simple and rustic nature of the location, please do not apply if you can’t survive without your luxuries. But if you enjoy the simple pleasures of life and being connected with nature then this retreat is certainly ideal for you.
You will be staying in single occupancy tambos (jungle huts). This is a standard type of accommodation here in the Amazon rainforest, and although simple and rustic, the tambos are comfortable, safe, protected by mosquito netting, and with great views of the jungle. Each tambo has its own private toilet.
All meals are provided. You’ll be eating a simple but healthy traditional jungle diet that includes yuca, green bananas, rice, fish, vegetables, and tropical fruits . We will follow the “shamanic diet” which helps to purify the body and enhance the effects of the medicine. If you’re vegetarian or have any special requirements please let us know in advance. On ceremony days you will only eat breakfast and lunch.
All transport is provided between Iquitos and the Kapitari Center. The journey takes about 1 hour 30 minutes and involves a 45 minute walk so you must be able bodied.
You are responsible for getting yourself to and from Iquitos. We recommend that you arrive in Iquitos at least 24 hours before the retreat starts to give yourself time to prepare, relax and overcome jet lag if you’re likely to have any. When you sign-up you will be provided with a PDF document that will give you lots of useful information about travelling to Peru and staying in Iquitos including hotel recommendations.
When Aya calls, Kapitari is where I go to marinate in pure love. It’s where Nature finds my shoes as abhorrent as I do, and quickly, creatively, reclaims them—turning them into a termite mound overnight, or conspiring with mud puddles to gobble them off my feet. There is no need of shoes at Kapitari. There is no need of anything. There are no “trappings”…simply wee thatched huts for sleeping in, nurturing mud/fruit baths, giggles with the locals, reinvigorating swims, parrot greetings, cosmic night skies, global kindred spirits, simple nutritious meals, and the breathing, stirring aliveness of Mother Jungle. It will move you. Don Lucho and his family are open, kind and loving healers. For those who come seeking answers, healing, or to do the hard-hard-gritty-hard soul work, Don Lucho will safely and beautifully move you through each healing and journeying ceremony.” – Carole T, Canada
“There are no words for how amazing my experience at Kapitari was! Don Lucho and Wagner are fantastic Shamans who are so connected with nature and everything around them! Andy and Carolina are also some of the nicest people you’ll meet. There is plenty to do while staying at Kapitari, you’d be silly to go anywhere else! Cannot wait to go back. Much Love!” – LadyfaceLou
“I love Kapitari and hope to go back soon. I did a lot of research before choosing Kapitari and also went by gut feeling that it would be the best choice for me. It was my second retreat in Peru so I knew a little what to expect, but Kapitari was so much better than the first time. It is a beautiful place, the lake is perfect for swimming, and personally I am not interested in yoga or art therapy that is done at some other places. Don Lucho and staff take perfect care of you when needed and otherwise you are in your own healing discovery experience, or sharing time with awesome like-minded people. My personal healing was incredible after I experienced higher love with the Madre. I can’t recommend Kapitari highly enough for anyone drawn to ayahuasca. And it is so cool meeting the Bora and Shipibo people. Just go.” – Marie Scott
I was very fortunate to find this retreat at the time I needed. I am not a hippy, star child, new age follower etc. I am a Veteran. After spending 24 years in the British army I have come to question many things about myself and life. I spent a week with the Kapitari retreat, we were well looked after during the whole process and it felt safe. Don Lucho is an excellent shaman and I got the answers to just about everything in one night. Even as I write this the power of those visions overwhelm me and I want to weep. I am thinking of returning at some point. If you are looking for something, anything then come here and be renewed.” – Gaz Story
If you’re looking for a rustic authentic experience with ayahuasca then this is your retreat, I’ve just been there for one week and I can honestly say it was perfect in every way possible from the facilitators, the shaman and the staff. It’s a very friendly and safe environment and don and his family where extremely welcoming. There’s no glam here so if that’s your bag then go elsewhere as you’ll be washing in a pond although they where installing a shower system whilst we where there.i had the privilege of the company of some of the nicest people I have ever met whilst on the retreat it was brilliant and couldn’t have asked for anything more 5* from me” – Gaz Norris, UK
There are many Ayahuasca retreats to choose from in Peru. In the end you should always trust your own intuition and attend the retreat which feels the most right for you.
However if you’re struggling to decide then here are a few good reasons to choose Kapitari:
– Kapitari is one of the few Ayahuasca centers that is 100% owned by Peruvians and run for the benefit of Peruvians in the local community. Many retreat centers in Peru are owned by westerners who often keep most of the profits for themselves.
– Kapitari is also one of the most beautiful centers we’ve seen in Peru. Almost everyone falls in love with the place from the moment they arrive. However, it is simple and rustic and definitely not a place of luxury. See the photo gallery.
– With about 40 years of experience Don Lucho is one of the most experienced Ayahuasca shamans working today.
– Don Lucho’s Ayahuasca is pure cielo ayahuasca made from only the Ayahuasca vine and Chacruna plant. There are no other additives except for a tiny amount of Mapacho (jungle tobacco). All the ayahuasca is cooked at Kapitari.
– You are safe and well looked after. English speaking facilitators are available 24 hours per day (during group retreats only). Two facilitators are always with you in ceremony as well as Don Lucho and his wife. Help is always available if you need it.
– At far less than $1000, this is one of the best value retreats in Peru. We run this retreat because we genuinely want to help people and not because we want to get rich.
The cost of this retreat is just $800 USD, all inclusive, for 6 nights/7 days and 4 Ayahuasca ceremonies. We believe this is one of the best value retreats in Peru where it is now common to pay well over $1000 for a week.
If you cancel more than 4 weeks before the retreat starts you will receive a full refund; however, the refund will be issued in USD. So if you paid $800 then you will be refunded $800. However, if the currency of your bank/credit card is not in USD then the refund will be converted to your own currency using the exchange rates on the day of the refund. Due to the constant fluctuations of exchange rates, it’s possible you might receive slightly more or slightly less than you originally paid in your own currency.
Ayahuasca in and of itself is a very safe medicine. However, when taken in conjunction with certain other medications, drugs or health conditions can be dangerous or even life-threatening. It is therefore important to be open and honest on the registration form. This is for your own safety.
